Therasnore™   Snoring and Sleep Apnea Relief Prisma Dental is pleased to offer patients Distar Therasnore oral appliances to treat snoring and sleep apnea. The product can work wonders, as the following message from a grateful patient indicates:

"Before using the Therasnore device, I was completely dependent on carrying oxygen around and using it when I was sleeping to breathe normally during the night. One of my friends had heard that the product was available here in Costa Rica so I went to Prisma Dental to find out more. Using the product, I have already seen a large improvement in my oxygen intake. After a couple of adjustments I am no longer dependent on oxygen and I can finally sleep side by side with my wife -- which is wonderful!
I feel like this product has given me back my life again and I would definitely recommend it for anyone with a snoring problem!

It is estimated that at least 50% of the world's population snores. Out of that percentage, at least 40% have some form of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). These numbers continue to grow every day and the general public is becoming more aware of the dangers associated with snoring. Snoring usually occurs when your tongue and the tissues around the back of the throat relax during sleep. This relaxation causes the tongue and the soft palatal area to fall back and obstruct your airway. When this obstruction occurs, it reduces the amount of air going into the body. This reduction in air flow panics and increases the velocity of air entering your body. The increase in airflow velocity causes the fine tissues in your throat to vibrate and causes the snoring noise. Apnea is a Greek word that means without breath and refers to the subsequent sleep cessation of breathing during sleep. The obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is the second leading cause of stroke in men and the fourth leading cause in arrest in women. Other health problems related with snoring include:

Sleep Apnea
Hypertension
High Blood pressure
Heart Conditions
Stroke
Cardiac Arrest
Even death

These alterations about sleeping produced by snoring can be controlled by a custom made appliance that resembles an athletic mouth guard and is to be worn while ssleeping.

The appliance eliminates or greatly reduces the snoring noise in patients and helps to keep the airway open. The device works by moving the lower jaw forward, and when occurs, the tongue will follow forward and the soft palatal tissues cannot retrude and obstruct the airway. In other words, you get more air and you do not snore.

The appliance usually lasts approximately 18 to 24 months, however with proper care it can last a longer lifetime. Once Prisma customizes the device for you, they can provide you with instructions to clean and store the device to prolong its durability.

Recent studies have indicated that 87 to 93% of worldwide cases have shown to be effective in treating simple snoring and mild to moderate OSA. With this outstanding statistic, hopefully we may be closer to cure snoring completely.

This appliance is approved by the FDA and the Academy of Medicine Sleep Lab.

Perio Protect™

Prisma Dental offers one of the most advanced methods of treating and preventing periodental disease --the patented Perio Protect Method. The Perio Protect Method is a comprehensive treatment approach to oral health that incorporates a range of dental therapies with patient homecare. One tool that dentists can prescribe for their patients as a part of the comprehensive method is a Perio Tray®.The Perio Tray is a medical device cleared by the U.S. FDA and intended to be used to place solutions of the clinician's choice into gingival crevices or periodontal pockets, the spaces that can develop between the teeth and gums.

When Prisma prescribes Perio Trays, precise impressions of a patient's mouth are taken and customized trays are fabricated. Patients describe the Perio Tray as comfortable, easy to use, and convenient.

Periodontal Disease

Bacterial infections are at the root of most dental health concerns. A bacterial infection can result when food, bacteria, and tartar are not sufficiently cleaned from the teeth. In the beginning, an infection develops along the gum line, but if it is left untreated it may progress to damage the gums, teeth, and bone. Common symptoms of oral bacterial infections include the following :
  • Bleeding gums when brushing or flossing
  • Receding gums (teeth appear longer)
  • Obvious plaque, tartar or calculus
  • Spaces developing between your teeth
  • Swollen, red or tender gums
  • Persistent bad breath
  • Sensitive teeth
  • Teeth are loose or mobile
If you have any of these symptoms, you are not alone. More than 85% of American adults age 35-44 have bleeding gums. This statistic is important because bleeding gums are a leading indicator that a bacterial infection is taking root. The dentists at Prisma have many options, among them the Perio Tray, to address your specific needs.
